Alexis Sanchez has opened up to Arsenal legend Thierry Henry about why he left the Gunners for Manchester United last month.
The Chile international star swapped the Emirates Stadium for Old Trafford towards the end of the January window, signing a £500k-a-week deal. Sanchez scored his first United goal from the penalty spot in a 2-0 win over Huddersfield, and now he has opened up about his move.
He said: “i think that Manchester United, since I was young – and I’m not just saying this because I’m here, I’m an honest guy and I never lie – I think it’s the biggest club in England. That’s what I think. “there are lots of big clubs, and having played for Arsenal, they are also one of them. It’s a huge club and I was there. “i came here to win [things]. I left Arsenal because I wanted to develop and learn as a player, and get to experience a new club. “manchester United are a huge club on the global stage. I came here to win everything. Otherwise I wouldn’t have come here.”
He netted his first goal for the club in a 2-0 win against Huddersfield Town last weekend, having been named Man of the Match on his debut in the Fa Cup Fourth Round demolition of League Two Yeovil Town. With Man United having won two major pieces of silverware last campaign, the Efl Cup and Uefa Europa League, Sanchez insisted that he joined the club in order to win.
“i came here to win. I left Arsenal because I wanted to develop and learn as a player, and get to experience a new club. Manchester United are a huge club on the global stage,” Sanchez said. “i came here to win everything. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have come here. “coming here, looking at the badge, I think United have to win everything because it’s such a big club. The club crest says it all.”
The forward has already spoken of his admiration of United as a kid watching from afar in Chile, and stated that he has no doubt that the Reds are England’s biggest football club. “i think that Manchester United, since I was young – and I’m not just saying this because I’m here, I’m an honest guy and I never lie – I think it’s the biggest club in England,” he continued. “that’s what I think.” With United still in the Fa Cup, where they’ll face Huddersfield in the fifth round, as well as sitting second in the Premier League and preparing to play Sevilla in the Uefa Champions League, Sanchez will be hoping he can get his hands on a trophy immediately.
